SYNOD 2021-2024 Communion Participation Mission
The ‘Continental phase’ of the Synod continues, with a week-long Continental Assembly of Europe having been held 5-12 February. The Assembly brought together representatives from all the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe to continue the synodal ‘process of listening dialogue and discernment’, begun at parish and national level in 2021-22. Similar assemblies are being held in the continents of North America, Asia, Middle East, Latin America & Caribbean, Africa & Madagascar, and Oceania. A statement from our Assembly of Europe lists a number of priorities which emerged and could be considered at the next phase of the Synod in October. Many of these relate to further integrating the synodal style into the life of the Church: deepening ‘the practice, theology and hermeneutics (interpretation) of synodality, exploring the ‘forms of a synodal exercise of authority’, clarifying ‘criteria for discernment on the synodal process and which decisions belong on which level’, and fostering ‘the formation to synodality of the whole People of God’. Please pray for the Synod and for our participation, walking together along the way, united in Christ, the Way, the Truth and the Life.

Adsumus Sancte Spiritus:We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name. With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts; teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it. We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder. Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions. Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right. All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever. Amen.

PRAYING TOGETHER:
We Pray for:

  • the residents of Rosewood Avenue, Whitby Avenue, Egerton Drive, Donne Place, Kipling Road, Wordsworth Mews and Wordsworth Square.

Would all regular attendees please note the new earlier start and finish times.

CONFIRMATIONS 2023:
The Chester Parishes take it in turns to organise Confirmation. Last year it was St Columba’s and St Theresa’s, this year St Werburgh’s, St Clare’s and St Francis. The date is Wednesday 10th May, 7.00 pm, at St Francis. The Classes will be on Wednesday evenings at St Werburgh’s, 7.00 pm. Flyers at the back of church give full details. Minimum age is Year 8 in the High Schools – no maximum! Launch Meeting is Monday 20th February, and first class is Wednesday 1st March. Contact Fr Paul at St Werburgh’s if you need more information – but the flyer should answer most questions.

A PARISH RITE OF SENDING
As announced last Sunday, at 11 am Mass today Fr William will ask the parish to support and strengthen Anil Palmar, Lindsay Hasaj and John Toop, who are preparing to be received into the Church at Easter. Following his homily Fr William will conduct a Rite of Sending by which the parish, and the Church at large, sends the three to Bishop Mark for the Rite of Election at Shrewsbury Cathedral on the 26th February. Copies of the Rite are available in church porches, to help the congregation to follow it and make the responses when Fr William asks.

CAFOD’s TURKEY/SYRIA EARTHQUAKE APPEAL:
Let us join CAFOD in praying for our sisters and brothers affected by the earthquakes and the winter weather.  There will be no special collection in church for this appeal as CAFOD’s Lent Fast Day is coming up soon. But you can donate online at https://cafod.org.uk/give/donate-to-emergencies/turkey-syria-earthquake-appeal to help provide food, water and shelter to survivors.

In addition, the Third World wall boxes in both the front and back porches at St Columba’s are now available for donations to the Disasters Emergency Committee Appeal for their work to provide help and supplies.

MATERIALS FOR REFLECTION FOLLOWING THE SYNODAL SUBMISSIONS:
In submissions to the Synodal Process, many people expressed a desire for formation in e.g. Scripture, spirituality and, specifically, the teachings of the Second Vatican Council. To meet these requests, the Department for Evangelisation is offering an introduction to the Council, together with a presentation of two of its major Documents: Dei Verbum (on Revelation) and Lumen Gentium (on the Church). The aim is simply to give an overview of both documents, and enough insight into their content and ongoing importance to encourage people to read the texts for themselves, copies of both of which are available at the CTS or on the Vatican website.

This presentation will take the form of a recorded conversation between Miss Barbara Davies (Coordinator for New Evangelisation) and Dr Stephen Yates (Senior Mission Catechist). The mp3 audio file will be available on the diocesan website from the beginning of Lent; the material will not, however, be time-bound. Printable handouts will enable individual and group reflection. For further information, please contact either Barbara(07730 526821) or Stephen (07842 487978).

NEEDLE & PINS
Everyone is welcome to come along to this friendly needlecraft group in St Columba’s Hall, between 2:00-4:00pm every fourth Wednesday of the month. Hope to see you 22nd February.

RED MISSION BOXES, ST COLUMBA’S
If you have a Red Mission box for collection, please leave it in the sacristy. When counted I can return your box to your home. Thank you, Margaret Curtis 01244 318424.

Thought for the week:
“Lent stimulates us to let the Word of God penetrate our life and in this way to know the fundamental truth: Who we are, where we come from, where we must go, what path we must take in life.” Pope Benedict the XVI

We’re all in this together:
With Lent starting on the 22 February, thoughts often wander as to what you might give up or sacrifice over the period.  Changing a habit or maybe adding in a new habit.  Maybe refusing that biscuit with that cuppa, or taking time out to read a meditation or prayer, or poem or page of the bible?   By observing the 40 days of Lent, we replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days.   Our change in habit will hopefully allow us to reflect and prepare for the Lord’s resurrection and the celebration of Easter.

Resources:
If you fancy joining a wellbeing walk, we have two walks close to the Parish: Blacon. Meeting point is Holy Trinity Church CH1 5LA. Tuesday 9.30 (14 Feb- thereafter 10am) lasts about 45 mins and Countess of Chester Health Park, meeting point, The friendly Bench, Friday start 1.00pm, lasts about 1hr. Friendly walks with plenty of chat. For more information check out the Ramblers Wellbeing walk information on their web site.

Thought for the week The best and most beautiful things in this world cannot be seen or even heard but must be felt with the heart.” Helen Keller

We’re all in this together I don’t know if any of you managed to do the RSPB big garden bird watch the other weekend in your garden or local park? Talking to a friend she was saying that the Jays were missing from her garden recently.  What aspect of nature would you miss if it was gone?  bird song, hedgerow flowers, spiders’ webs in the morning dew, field mice, hedgehogs? The human drive to protect nature starts with us noticing the differences and caring about it and being able to do our bit to help. It might be leaving a log pile or leaves for insects, keeping a bit of wilder ground for insects and smaller mammals, sowing wildflower seeds. Anything that might help nature.  It doesn’t have to cost. But every little bit will help nature and our environment.  See what you can do.

Resources community bulb planting Tuesday 21st Feb 1.30-3.00pm. Meet at the friendly bench at the Countess of Chester Country Park. Bring gardening gloves and a trowel if you have them, but don’t worry if you don’t have them.

ST COLUMBA’S CHOIR:
St Augustine used to say: ‘when you sing you pray twice’.

In 2022 some children started to take part in the parish choir. They sang regularly at mass, they took part at a Parish event and made recordings for the Parish website. Thanks to all the children and the parents that took time and effort to celebrate with their voice and talent the Glory of God.

In 2023 we would like to invite even more young people and children to participate in the choir.  If you like singing, if you want to support the choir, learn something new, find new friends and pray twice you just need to sit on the front left side of the church. You do not need to know the music or be able to sing.  Please come to mass a bit earlier around 10:30 so we can warm up the voice and sometimes we will ask to stay a bit longer after mass to practise.

If you or your parents/guardians want any clarification please do not hesitate to contact Giovanna 07728 948946 or the director of the choir Mark, 07752 317772 or approach them after mass.

Thought for the week “The fullness of Joy is to behold God in everything.” Julian of Norwich .

We’re all in this together This Sunday,  5th February carries the theme of Racial Justice Sunday, its theme “All are included in the mission of Christ and His Church. Let us walk together, pray together and work together”.  As Catholics we believe that every human being is created equally in the image of God. It is important to consider how we can better reflect this in our own actions, both as individuals and part of the wider Church. The following prayer is taken from Pope Francis encyclical letter Fratelli Tutti – on fraternity and social friendship: friendship: Maybe this may help us in our reflections “Come, Holy Spirit, show us your beauty, reflected in all the peoples of the earth, so that we may discover anew that all are important, and all are necessary, different faces of the one humanity that God so loves. Amen.”

Resources LiBS (the Library iPad Borrowing Scheme) will provide devices for residents to borrow for a six-week period from any Cheshire West and Chester Library.  All you need is a library card and a form of ID, and you can join the library online in advance.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
Be thankful for yesterday. Be grateful for today. Be hopeful for tomorrow. Roger Lee

WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER:
Reading an article this week, it is said that the older you get, the more serious you become – on average, adults laugh 15 times a day while a toddler laughs 400 times a day!  That’s quite a difference.  I know, as adults, we generally have more to concern us, work, family, bills, etc. but, maybe in all of that “life”, we have lost our happy place.   How do we get the laughter back and be a bit more toddler like? I did once have a colleague who told us a joke a day; it would certainly break the ice on the day ahead.  Maybe, it’s to see the days in multi colour with all its fascinating facets and take more of those opportunities that arise to smile, giggle and laugh.  Why should the toddlers have all the fun!  Have a good week.

SYNOD 2021-2024
Communion Participation Mission
News from the Vatican on the extension of the Synod to 2024 -The Pope’s decision means that the Synod will now close in 2024 rather than 2023 as originally planned. The extra year will be used to convene a second meeting of the Synod participants. Sr. Becquart XMCJ, Undersecretary of the Synod’s General Secretariat, has commented ‘So it’s one Synod in two sessions. And in the meanwhile the Synod participants will come back to their diocese and there will be time to continue the process, to discern, to experience synodality. It’s really a decision – and Pope  Francis has explained that – to deepen discernment, because synodality is really about discerning together, listening to each other, listening to the Holy Spirit. It’s learning by doing, we can say. So it takes time.’

Please pray for the Synod and for our participation, walking together along the way, united in Christ, the Way, the Truth and the Life.

Adsumus Sancte Spiritus: We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name. Amen.

SYNOD WEBINAR:
The Newman Association invite you to a Zoom based Synod Webinar on Thursday 26th January at 7.00 p.m.

FR JAMES:
Fr James would like to thank everyone for their gifts and good wishes and asks that you remember him in your prayers as he will pray for us.  Thank you to everyone who came along last Sunday to bid farewell to Fr James . He will be leaving the country on the 23rd January, we wish him a safe journey.

Fr James received £1195, a papal Blessing and a Weekday and a Sunday Missal from the parish.

THANK YOU:
Ellie Marsden’s family would like to thank all those at St Columba’s Church who helped to make her funeral  service a memorable occasion, particularly for her family. We would also like to thank parishioners, her friends and the St Columba’s community who attended the service, sent cards and arranged to have masses and prayers said for her.    As a family we are very grateful for the kindness and support we received  as our mothers very long life came to a close. Many Thanks.

NEEDLES AND PINS:
Everyone is welcome to come along to this friendly needlecraft group in St Columba’s Hall, between 2:00-4:00pm every fourth Wednesday of the month. Hope to see you 25th January.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity’ – Psalm 133

WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER:
With Fr James saying his last Masses in our parish last weekend, we say a very fond farewell to him and grateful thanks for all his work.  He leaves us for a sabbatical, time out, just to be and refresh.  It’s important for us all to look after ourselves, we can try and use down time to refresh and be calm.  And with “Blue Monday” (third Monday of January) having just gone, often billed as the most depressing day of the year, with Christmas festivities long forgotten and the shine already wearing off New Year’s resolutions, it’s time for us to look after ourselves.  It might only be time for a cuppa, listening to a meditation, listening to our favourite music, reading a book, or taking a stroll, but time out and to ourselves, however that may happen, can often be helpful to our own mental and physical health.  Enjoy your time. See you next week.

RESOURCES:
Try something new with our libraries during health and wellbeing week 23-29 January  Tickets available. https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/cwaclibraries . Variety of things to try from seated exercise, nordic walking, driving for longer, crafting, singing…. plenty to try.
