DEACON TOM COYLE:
Deacon Tom Coyle: It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Deacon Tom Coyle on Friday 21 July 2023.
Deacon Tom moved to Chester in June 2018 from Maidstone in Kent, where he had been a deacon for almost 19 years. He was appointed by Bishop Mark to serve as a deacon in St Columba’s parish, along with Deacon Lawrence. Deacon Tom was a Knight of the Papal Order of St Gregory.
Deacon Tom was born and brought up in Dunfermline in Scotland before moving to London where he worked in the Civil Service for 40 years. He had two children with his wife Lyn who was from Lincolnshire. They moved to Chester to be near their family in the North West.
Deacon Tom was an active minister in our parish until the Covid pandemic hit in 2020 when he then began preparing weekly reflections which were published on the parish website. He did this for about a year until mid-2021 when failing health prevented him from being more active following the pandemic.
We remember Deacon Tom and his family in our thoughts and prayers, may he rest in peace.

SYNOD 2021 – 2024:
In Rome, from 4-29 October, bishops, priests, religious and lay people will be asked to consider a series of questions as part of the global synod process. The document for discussion will consider how women can better participate in “governance, decision–making, mission and ministries at all levels of the church.” Pope Francis has ruled that, for the first time, women will take part in the assembly as voting members. Questions to be considered include the ordination of married men, greater acceptance of LGBTQ+ Catholics, a reform of governance, the selection of bishops and lay leadership. These are all issues which emerged from last year’s consultation process in which our parish played its part. Pauline Rourke

WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER:
With exam results coming out for our school students over the next few weeks, we want to wish you all the very best for your future and whatever adventure awaits you, be it sixth form, college, university, work, apprenticeships, year out… Whatever your exam results, remember that results don’t make a person, or necessarily predict the future. It’s what we know to be true about ourselves that will define us. As they say, “the world is your oyster” and as one door closes, another will open for you, a new beginning, no matter what your results are. Enjoy. And good luck!
