“Peace is not merely the absence of war; nor can it be reduced solely to the maintenance of a balance of power between enemies; nor is it brought about by dictatorship. Instead, it is rightly and appropriately called an enterprise of justice.” – Gaudium et Spes (GS 78)
The vision of Just and Peace commission in the Diocese of Shrewsbury:
‘A diocese fully engaged with the call of God to be a people of justice and peace’. Its purpose statement is ‘As Christians, we are called to try to live out God’s will. God calls us to act for the common good and the good of all creation. The main task of the members of the Commission is to answer that call personally and to engage the diocese in doing likewise, in the light of scripture and Catholic social teaching.’
The parish takes part in the following Justice and Peace projects.
CAFOD
CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) is the official Catholic aid agency for England and Wales. We work with partners across the world, wherever the need is greatest, to bring hope and compassion to poor communities, standing side by side with them to end poverty and injustice. We work with people of all faiths and none.
Our 2 primary schools, St Theresa’s in Blacon and St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s in Hoole, regularly fundraise for CAFOD following a visit from a school volunteer. ’s in Hoole, regularly fundraise for
At St Theresa’s and St Columba’s we do not have a specific CAFOD group but we participate in both Family Fast days, one at Harvest time and one in Lent and we also take part in CAFOD’s latest campaigns whenever possible. For instance, with the SVP, we took part in asking our prospective parliamentary candidates their views on specific issues such as climate change, poverty and international aid prior to the General Election last July.
