MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING CONTRIBUTION
A huge thank you to everyone who baked or bought any of the delicious cakes or donated money at our MacMillan Cancer Support coffee morning. We raised a massive £289.97 – our biggest ever total.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY (APF) 15 October
Next Sunday is World Mission Sunday and there will be a retiring collection at all Masses.

PRISONERS’ SUNDAY – 8^th OCT:
Prisoners Week is 8-14 October. This Sunday, 8 October is a National Day of Prayer and Action for prisoners and families. This is an important opportunity for us all to direct our thoughts and prayers to the needs of prisoners and their families, and those who work to support our brothers and sisters affected by the criminal justice system.

PARISH PASTORAL PLAN DEVELOPED FROM PARISH SYNOD CONSULTATION:
Pope Francis’ Synodal Message:

“By growing together in Communion, the people of God deepen their Participation in the life of the Church and so become more effective Missionary disciples in the world”.

Following on from the Synod responses last year and the subsequent implementation of the Parish Action plan, your Pastoral Council has been considering how the parish can be even more inclusive, engaging and outgoing – all topics raised by parishioners. In order to do this we need a lot more people to be actively involved – to deepen their participation in the life of the church- and we need financial support.

As regards volunteering – your Pastoral Council has identified a whole range of areas which need your support, clarified what they are and how much time they demand. We are now asking all of you to consider how you might be able to volunteer.

On the weekends of 15th and 22nd October, co-chairs of the Pastoral Council, Pauline Rourke and Ann McCarthy will be speaking at Masses with details of how you can get involved.

ST PIO PRAYER GROUP:
The next meeting is on Thursday, 12 October, starting at 2pm in Flat 5, Abbots Court, Eversley Park, Chester CH2 2DY. Everyone is welcome.

CELEBRATION OF MARRIED LIFE:
On Saturday 14^th October 2023 a diocesan celebration of married life will be held at St Columba’s Church at 12noon. All welcome but those who are celebrating a significant Wedding Anniversary (Silver, Ruby, Golden, Diamond) and newly married couples especially so; if they wish to receive a personal invitation from Bishop Mark, they should send their names, addresses and Anniversary being celebrated to Theresa Stones at curia@dioceseofshrewsbury.org by Friday 29 September.

HEALING MASS AT ST WERBURGH’S, CHESTER: Sunday 15 October at 2.30pm
“Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11) An invitation to pray, meditate and reflect. Stay and chat after Mass – refreshments will be provided by the SVP

NEWS FROM THE WIDER CATHOLIC WORLD : ST THERESA OF LISIEUX:
The Pope is to publish a letter on St Theresa on 15 October to mark the 150^th anniversary of her birth. He said St Theresa lived ‘devoted to God, forgetting about herself, loving and consoling Jesus, and interceding for the salvation of all’. St Theresa’s Jubilee Year ends on 7^th January 2024.

YOUTH GROUP:
Our next meeting will be on Monday 16th October at St.Theresa’s Centre, 7pm to 8.30pm. All young parishioners in school year 5, or older, are warmly invited to join our happy,
friendly group.

CATECHISTS’ CONFERENCE:
The Shrewsbury Diocesan Catechists Conference will be on Saturday 21^st October at St Columba’s Church Hall 10am-4pm, presented by the Dominican Sisters of St Joseph and the Diocesan Mission for Catechists team. Their last day in our parish was very interesting, informative and enjoyable. This is for anyone who is already a Catechist, and for those who want to find out a bit more about being a Catechist. CT UPTON FIFTH SUNDAY SERVICE:
This will be held on the theme of “the Two Saints Way” at Holy Ascension Church at 4.30 p.m. on Sunday 29^th October. We are invited to read one of the readings at this service. If you would like to do this, please contact savage214@btinternet.com

PARISH FINANCES – PLANNED GIVING/GIFT AID APPEAL:
Following last week’s Gift Aid appeal there are boxes at both church exits for any completed forms. PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING:
Your Pastoral Council met in St Theresa’s on Monday 11^th Sept. Reports were received prior to the meeting from each of the sub-groups and any matters arising discussed. The reports can be viewed on the website. The main focus of the meeting was consideration and planning of the forthcoming “recruitment of volunteers” strategy which will take place on the weekends of 14/15^th Oct and 21^st/22^nd Oct. CATHOLIC YOUTH MINISTRY INTERNSHIPS:
Castlerigg Manor (The Lancaster Diocese Retreat Centre) is looking for young Catholics aged 18-25 to join their Internship Programme. The scheme lasts for one or two years and gives participants wide ranging experience, skills, training, and qualifications as well as the opportunity to work with a fantastic team based in the Lake District. FIRST COMMUNION PREPARATION CLASSES:
These classes begin this Wednesday 4^th October from 5pm to 6pm in the church hall and are for children who come to St Columba’s or St Theresa’s churches but do not attend a Catholic Primary School. If you have a child in Year 3 or above who would like to enrol to join these classes to prepare for First Forgiveness and First Holy Communion this school year please ring Pauline Payne on 01244 350323 or email pauline.payne4@btinternet.com

PARISH FINANCES-GIFT AID APPEAL:
Following the Gift Aid appeal anyone wishing to take advantage of Gift Aid can pick up a form as you leave the church. This can be completed as you leave or be completed and returned to church later in the ballot style boxes that will be available. Alternatively the completed forms can be sent directly to the Diocesan office at the address shown on the form.
Anyone wishing to set up a Standing Order can also obtain a form which can be completed and returned to your bank.

CAFOD FAMILY FAST DAY APPEAL: Harvest collection at Masses this week.
Dr Nasha’s mobile medical clinic gets life-saving help to where it’s needed most, fast – so when her team arrived in Meera’s village in Pakistan after it had been destroyed by flooding, Meera rushed to the clinic to get her children the treatment they needed. See the poster at the front of St Theresa’s and in the front porch at St Columba’s for more details and photographs. Donate to CAFOD today so that more families can get the expert help they need. VACANCY ST COLUMBA’S OFFICE: ACCOUNTS CLERK:
There is a vacancy in the parish office for a very part time accounts clerk – half a day a month, morning, afternoon or evening – essentially to input our financial data which is held as paper copy on to the diocesan computer system. As the papers should stay on site the work would be carried out in the Newman Room. Some book keeping or similar experience would be helpful but is not essential as training will be provided by the diocese. For details of salary and further information please speak to Fr William, Colin Hedley or Pauline Rourke.

FEAST OF ST THERESA:
Thanks to those who have donated towards flowers to decorate the church, it is much appreciated. There will be cake with tea and coffee in the club after the 9.30am Mass at St Theresa’s. All welcome.

SYCAMORE WEBINAR
A webinar about the Sycamore, a tool for evangelisation in parishes, will take place on Thursday 5th October at 7pm. Clare Dancaster and Natalie Orefice will provide the story of Sycamore, introducing the pathways, how to get started, a walkthrough of resources and support and training. HIGHLIGHT FROM THE HIGH:
Over 30 students have signed up to complete the Faith in Action Award 2023/2024. This number is growing year by year, a clear sign of commitment from the students to their faith by showing love and service to their neighbours. Five students are working to achieve the Silver Award, which involves completing 20 credits in school and 15 credits in the local community. Good luck to all the students taking part!

The events will feature photographs and maps of each area through the years for residents to look at over tea, coffee and cake.
In Upton, The Heath Youth Club has started, open Fridays during term time 6.30-8.30 at Upton URC, 44 Heath Road. For young people year 7 and above.

FUNERAL OF DEACON TOM COYLE:
On behalf of my children, Catherine and Thomas, and myself I would like to express my thanks for the great support, love and respect shown to Tom at his funeral mass and at the reception following. Particular thanks to Bishop Mark, Fr William, all the parish and Diocesan clergy and to Bridget, our altar server. It was a wonderful service, enhanced by singing led by Mark Traynor, accompanied by organist Chris Steele. Thanks to Pauline Rourke for reading so beautifully and for her part in arranging the reception, along with Sue Carr, Sue McCarthy and other helpers I may be unaware of. The flowers in the church were beautiful.

Behind all the rushing around, is Carol, liaising and bringing people together. The Parish Office is blessed!

It was especially wonderful to welcome our friends from St Francis, Maidstone, where Tom had served as a deacon for 19 years: Fr Bartiolomeij Dudek, Deacon Ian Black and his wife, Angela, Mark Coatsworth and his wife Elizabeth. Their coming made the circle complete.

I am grateful for donations made to Leukaemia UK totalling £530, which includes a generous donation of £350 made by the son of our oldest friends. Thank you very much to all who donated.

If I have forgotten anyone, I apologise. All friends and family were extremely impressed by the love and care which had gone into the arrangements. It has been two years since I was able to come to mass regularly and yet I was made to feel so welcome. I hope to get to know the parish again and be part of that community. Thank you. Lyn Coyle.

NEWS FROM THE WIDER CATHOLIC WORLD:
It was agreed at the last Pastoral Council meeting to put occasional items of good and/ or encouraging news from the Catholic press in our newsletter. The first one about the generous actions of young people follows:

Catholic Schools Fundraising –
Between them nearly half the Catholic schools in England and Wales raised £610,000 in funds for Cafod last year. Catholic schools also donated more than £170,000 to emergency appeals including for victims of floods in Pakistan and the earthquake in Syria. In addition, 37 schools achieved the Live Simply award, committing to live sustainably and in solidarity with the world’s poorest communities. Pauline Rourke.

CHS OPEN MORNINGS:
The Catholic High School will be holding two Open Mornings on Monday 25^th and Tuesday 26^th September. It will be a chance to see the school in action. There will be two tours per day one at 9am and the other at 10am. These need to be booked and can be done so by either emailing welcometo@christofidelis.org.uk or by phoning the office on 01244 952788.

NEEDLES AND PINS – WEDNESDAY 27^TH SEPTEMBER:

Doesn’t look like the Covid virus is going away, anyone eligible can book their Covid vaccinations via the NHS website, by downloading the NHS App, or by calling 119 for free if they can’t get online. GP practices and other local NHS services will also be contacting people to offer both flu and Covid vaccines, and people can book the flu vaccine by searching online for a local pharmacy. WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER:
This Sunday, 24th September the Church will be celebrating the World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR), which has been celebrated since 1914. It is seen as an occasion to express concern for vulnerable people on the move, to pray for them as they face many challenges and to increase awareness about the opportunities that migration offers. The Pope says that “The synodal path that we have undertaken as a Church leads us to see in those who are most vulnerable – among whom are many migrants and refugees – special companions on our way, to be loved and cared for as brothers and sisters. Only by walking together will we be able to go far and reach the common goal of our journey”. As we continue on our synodal journey the WDMR gives us time to consider the most vulnerable within our society.

FIRST COMMUNION PREPARATION CLASSES:
These classes are for children who come to either St Columba’s or St Theresa’s churches but do not attend one of the RC Primary Schools. They are held in St Columba’s Hall on Wednesday evenings in term time from 5pm to 6pm.The classes will begin on Wednesday 4th October. If you have a child in Year 3 or above who would like to enrol to join these classes to prepare for First Forgiveness and First Holy Communion this school year, or if you would like any further information, please ring Pauline Payne on 01244 350323, email: pauline.payne4@btinternet.com.

This Ecumenical service takes place at St Columba’s on Sunday 17^th September at 3pm. All are welcome. No Tickets required. Pause for Hope is an ecumenical service for those affected in any way by cancer; those suffering from cancer, those supporting those living with cancer, and those who have lost loved ones to cancer. Life itself is a journey and, through life and our decisions and actions, we grow. The things we have thought important when we were younger may well change over time. We all have different experiences and different reference points, and lots of freedom to shape our own journey, that’s what makes life interesting. What will you do this week?

Thank you – from Alex Mosquera. To all those who bought teas, coffees, cakes and books and supplied socks for sock puppets, a massive thank you. While we were in Uganda, we managed to hang 900 mosquito nets, taught dental health and gave out 2000 toothbrushes & distributed over 1500kgs of clothing and shoes and school supplies. I came into contact with over 1500 children. We taught classes, Sunday school, hygiene, provided health education, made reusable sanitary products, undertook a variety of community projects and much, much more. Thank you.

ZUMBATHON FOR HOME OF PEACE, UGANDA
Saturday 23^rd September, 10 am to 12pm at St Columba’s Hall – Zumbathon to raise funds for the ‘Home of Peace – Uganda’ an Orphanage that needs help to keep children in education for the rest of this year. Entrance for adults is £10 and children (6+) £5. Please pay on the door. There will also be a raffle.

THE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL, CHESTER OPEN EVENING:
The Catholic High School, Chester are hosting an open evening on the Thursday 21^stof September between 6pm and 8pm. The evening is an invitation for Year 5 and 6 students, and their families, to come and visit our wonderful school in Handbridge, Chester. You can tour the school, meet teachers and pupils, take part in some fun activities and ask any questions you may have. No booking required.

Summer has returned, just as schools restart. Doesn’t seem right, does it? But it’s a second chance for us. Often, we overlook second chances, or the choices we can make. Psalm 1 is often called a wisdom psalm because we learn that happiness results from our choice to follow God’s direction of life rather than moving away from him. What way will you go? We all have choices.

ST COLUMBA’S CHURCH HALL:
The boiler in the hall is close to final expiry so a new one is about to be fitted and the heating system overhauled. It should make the hall warmer in the winter and more economical to heat. Preliminary work for the installation will start on Friday 18 August and continue into the following week. It is hoped that disturbance to activities in the hall will be kept to a minimum. The work will be finished in mid September. Pauline Rourke

SUPPORT FOR ONE OF YOUR PRIMARY SCHOOLS:
Currently St. Werburgh’s & St. Columba’s Primary School is bidding for up to £1,500 from a Tesco Community Grant. The project is for their Gardening and Wellbeing Club. Voting is open now in these Tesco stores: Chester Pepper St; Chester Delamere St; Chester Sealand Road CH1; Chester Weston Grove; Chester Broughton. Voting closes at the end of September. Customers vote using tokens at the check-out each time they shop.
