OAKS SCHOOL, BO, SIERRA LEONE
In 2003 Margaret Jarrett bought a plot of land in Bo, Sierra Leone and her vision was to build a school for children who were orphaned by the civil war. The OAKS charity was born, the school was built and today that school educates and looks after the health needs of 745 children. Margaret lives locally and has just been awarded a very well deserved MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List for her years of dedication, hard work and fund raising.

We warmly congratulate her and continue to support the charity as our Parish Third World Project. Any donations are welcome and can be put in the wall boxes in either porch. For  further  information please go to oaks-sl.org.

RNLI COLLECTIONS:
Hello, my name is Frances Hughes and I am the new Collections Coordinator for the Chester branch of the RNLI. The RNLI is celebrating its 200th anniversary and would not have survived, as a charity, without volunteers.  I am hoping to hold charity collections every few months and would like more volunteers.  If you have some free time at weekends, between 1-2 hours, or  would like to know more please email me at frances.douglas2@btinternet.com.  There is no set commitment and a huge amount of flexibility. Thank you.

ST COLUMBA’S & ST THERESA’S SVP ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2023/24:
Our income for 2023/24 was £1636 which came from Member and non member donations, raffle income, coffee mornings and other fund raising events. Our expenditure was £1647 which was spent giving assistance to Families, Refugees and Asylum seekers, support payments to SVP, support for the SVP holiday home, and overseas support through the twinnage scheme. During the year we continued to visit the elderly in their own homes, residential care or hospital. Also, we have been able  to support, practically and financially, many members of our community on the fringes of society who are in need. The SVP have also organised and delivered the Foodbank collections on behalf of our parish. We have provided 2 families with a holiday. With the help from our parish youth group we have been able to provide parish outreach work, particularly at Christmas and Easter, by delivering gift parcels to our more isolated parishioners. Thank you for all your support over the year and if you would like to consider joining the SVP please contact either Sue McCarthy or Mark Traynor.

ST COLUMBA’S 60th ANNIVERSARY:

June 2024: Foundation Governor Vacancy

19 June 2024 By amos

St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s Catholic Primary Schoool is currently recruiting a Catholic Church Foundation Governor to join their Governing Body.

The inclusion of Foundation Governors on the governing body is one of the distinguishing characteristics of a Church school and supports the school’s distinctive religious ethos. The vacancy must be filled by community members affiliated with the Catholic Church, who are not related to any children within our school and do not work in the education sector.

The role would suit someone with an interest in serving our community and supporting the needs of our school children. The role of a School Governing Body is:

• Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos, and direction of the school
• Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and it’s pupils.
• Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

No one governor is expected to know it all! The strength of a governing body lies in its ability to attract and rely upon members from a wide variety of backgrounds, share out duties amongst its members and be able to take decisions as a group.

The governing body is busy and energetic and would warmly invite anyone interested in finding out more about the role to contact the school in the first instance to arrange an informal chat. Telephone Sarah on 01244 478954 or email: admin@lovelearnlaugh.org.uk

Please note that for the protection of children, all governor appointments are subject to an identity check.

ST COLUMBA’S & ST THERESA’S SVP ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2023/24
Our income for 2023/24 was £1,636 which came from Member and non member donations, raffle income, coffee mornings and other fund raising events. Our expenditure was £1,647 which was spent giving assistance to Families, Refugees and Asylum seekers, support payments to SVP, support for the SVP holiday home, and overseas support through the twinnage scheme.

LET’S USE OUR CATHOLIC VOICE IN THE GENERAL ELECTION

You will find in your newsletter an insert that we ask you please to read and respond to by Sunday 9th June. Thank you.

LORDES PILGRIMAGE
‘Go tell the priests to come [here] in procession’ is the theme of this year’s Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes from 26 July to 1 August (depending on travel). We are expecting more pilgrims to journey with us this year, and it will be our largest pilgrimage since the pandemic. There are still some places available if you would like to join us this year. GIFT AID & OFFERTORY:
Thank you to those who signed up to participate in the Gift Aid scheme and those who increased their contributions. As we enter a new tax year please let us know if your circumstances have changed or if you wish to join the scheme. For St Columba’s call Kevin Keegan 07790 758008 or Colin Hedley 07913 950875 and for St Theresa’s call Stephen Parry 07798676633.
Thank you also to those who offered advice on using a card reader to support collections. We have looked at options but at the moment we would have to use the Diocesan scheme which we have concluded is too expensive to implement for now.

June 2024: Patronal Feast and First Holy Communions BBQ!

13 June 2024 By Michael Forber Leave a Comment

The annual celebration of our patron, St Columba, on June 9th, was a joyful day. Children who had made their first Holy Communion some weeks ago came to the 11.00 am mass with their families and catechists for a final celebration, led by the children themselves. A very peaceful, joyful mass was enjoyed by all present. The celebration of St Columba’s feast day continued with a parish BBQ. Warm thanks to the arrangers and cooks who braved the chilly weather. Another very sociable occasion for all who attended.
