LOURDES JUMBULANCE:
On Thursday 15th August there will be a Mass at St Columba’s at 9.45am for those going to Lourdes by Jumbulance. This is before the 10.30am Mass for the Feast of the Assumption .

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION -15th AUGUST:
This is a Holyday of Obligation and there will be Mass at St Theresa’s on Wednesday 14th August at 7pm, and at St Columba’s on Thursday 15th August at 10.30am.

It is proposed to reconvene the parish RCIA group in September. If you are thinking about seeking to become a Roman Catholic, or to be received into in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church, and would like to join the group to look into this, please contact Fr William or Deacon Lawrence for further details.

FR DESMOND:
Our assistant priest, Fr Desmond Wilson CSSP, will be leaving at the end of August. We thank him for his services to our parish and we wish him well in his next assignment.
If anyone would like to give a donation to Fr Desmond please put it in the envelope marked Fr Desmond and place it in the Offertory basket. Thank you.
There will be a chance to say goodbye to Fr Desmond in St Columba’s hall after the 11am Mass on Sunday 25th August. All welcome.

This is the theme for the next Churches Together in Upton Fifth Sunday Service to be held at St. Columba’s at 4.30 p.m. on Sunday 29th September. Further details to follow. Put the date in your diary.

CHESHIRE SWING CATS:
Dance in St. Columba’s Church Hall. Tuesday 27th August 7.30pm. Music provided by “Out of the Blue Jazz Orchestra” Tickets £10 contact www.cheshireswingcats.com
Last year’s event was a great success, please come along and enjoy the evening.
Cheshire Swing Cats teaches authentic swing dancing to adults at Hoole Community Centre in Chester. We focus on the 30s style of Lindy Hop and Charleston swing dancing in our main classes and deliver workshops on solo jazz, balboa, collegiate shag and blues. Our dance classes are fun and friendly.

FOODBANK NEEDS – you can download a free app for your mobile phone or computer which shows you what your local foodbank needs urgently, the app is ‘bankthefood’. Food currently needed in West Cheshire is coffee, cup a soup, long life juice, rice, tinned meat meals, tinned puddings, tinned tomatoes.

SPUC PETITION WEEKEND 10th/11th AUGUST:
Please do support the petition this weekend to remove the government’s punitive 2-child Child Benefit cap. Petition cards are available in church or you can sign online using the QR code or going to https://www.spuc.org.uk/end-benefit-cap

WELCOMING AFGHAN FAMILIES TO SAFETY:
Caritas Shrewsbury, as part of Citizens UK, are supporting the UK Government’s project to welcome refugee families into their communities. We’re not asking for money or donations, but rather volunteers who are willing to help these families when they arrive. WALKING SHREWSBURY DIOCESE:
Walking Shrewsbury Diocese – Fundraising for SVP Holiday Homes and Youth Camps. Kate Birkenhead (SVP Membership Officer for the Shrewsbury Diocese) and her partner Colin have completed their 221 mile walk, walking the whole of the Shrewsbury Diocese: from New Brighton on The Wirral to Ludlow in South Shropshire, via South Manchester, raising money for our local St Vincent De Paul Society Children’s Camps and Holiday homes. We are very pleased to welcome Magdalena Bukowska to this post. She will work alongside Carol Galvin from Monday 15 July until Wednesday 31 July when Carol retires and Magdalena will assume full responsibility.

The Diocesan Pilgrimage arrives in Lourdes on Friday 26 July and Bishop Mark has asked us to pray for the following intentions:

  • For the renewal of Eucharistic faith and love in all our parishes and families.
  • For the peace of the world amid threats of war and terror: may all peoples walk together in peace.
  • For the unity of the Church and of our Shrewsbury Diocese that we may always walk together in faithfulness.
  • For the upholding of the sanctity of every human life especially of the unborn, the sick and the aged.
  • For new and generous vocations to Marriage, to the Priesthood and to the Consecrated Life of women and of men.

On Monday 29 July at 10am (9am UK time) we will be celebrating Mass at the Grotto with other English Dioceses present in Lourdes. You, and your parishioners will be able to join us via Lourdes TVhttps://www.lourdes-france.org/en/tv-lourdes/ . Please cold you other Masses and liturgies may be on Lourdes TV too, including the International Mass on Sunday 28 July at 9.30am (8.30am UK time).  Please be assured of our prayers whilst we are in Lourdes.

 FOODBANK NEEDS – you can download a free app for your mobile phone or computer which shows you what your local foodbank needs urgently, the app is ‘bankthefood’. A lady from St Werburgh’s Church visited St. Columba’s. She brought in a book called “We Shall Remember Them” – Biographies of men associated with St. Werburgh’s Church” Apparently there is a misprint in them and are being given away for free. LOURDES BY JUMBULANCE:
The Chester Across Group are going to Lourdes by Jumbulance from Thursday 15th to Saturday 24th August. We travel overland in an adapted coach, which has seven beds on board. Therefore, we can take some sick or disabled pilgrims and so far we have a Doctor and two nurses and several helpers. However, we need two more helpers and there is a place for someone who is sick or disabled. The cost is £1,095 but help with costs is available. Current Passport required. Travel Insurance is available for just £65. FOURTH WORLD DAY FOR GRANDPARENTS AND THE ELDERLY – 28 JULY:
We will celebrate this day in honour of all grandparents and elderly members of our congregation next week.  This is the closest Sunday to the feast of St Anne and St Joachim, which we celebrate the Friday before on the 26th of July 2024. Pope Francis has written a message especially for this occasion and the Diocese has created a booklet that includes his message and the prayer prepared for the day.Please pick up the booklet and prayer cards from the back of the Church and you will find other resources on the Diocesan website.
