YOUTH SUNDAY 24 NOVEMBER

Fr William is taking a few days holiday from 15 – 22 November. We hope he has a well-deserved rest.

THE HOLY SOULS – NOVEMBER
Please put names/donations in an envelope, marked Holy Souls, and place in the basket in front of the altar.

Countess of Chester Country Park, Fallen for the Fallen WW1 Memorial Bench at 11a.m. on Monday 11 November to observe a two-minute silence to honour all those affected by war and conflict.

SINFONIA
Sinfonia are having their end of year rehearsal/party on Friday 29 November 7p.m.  in the Church Hall and have again invited parishioners to attend. Last year’s event was a lovely start to the festive season with music and song. Please come along and enjoy this occasion. Tea and nibbles will be provided

YOUTH GROUP
Our youth group will meet on Monday 18 November, starting at 7p.m. in the Iona chapel and finishing at 8.30p.m. in St. Columba’s Church Hall. All parishioners in school year 5, or older are very welcome to come along and join our happy group, learn a bit about our faith, play games, do activities, and generally have fun, snacks provided. If you need a lift, or more information, please call Denise Lusk (01244 379742).

EUCHARISTIC HOUR OF PRAYER FOR LIFE
This will take place from 9.30a.m. in St Columba’s on Wednesday 13 November.

NEW PRAYER GROUP – LECTIO DIVINA
Lectio Divina simply means Sacred Reading and it is a way of praying through reflection on God’s word, with a leader to guide the group. Initially, the plan is to have four sessions in the weeks before Christmas on Thursdays Nov 28, Dec 5, Dec 12, and Dec 19 in the Iona Chapel at 11a.m. Each session will last no more than 40 minutes, allowing a little time to introduce the process. This type of prayer group works best with a maximum of 12 people and so anyone who is interested and would like to know more/ join with no commitment, is asked to send a brief email to marilyn.coyle44@gmail.com  This will allow any information to be sent out and numbers to be kept reasonable. BLESSING OF THE NEW LECTIONARIES
The new lectionaries will be Blessed at all Masses on the weekend of 1 December 2024.

CONFIRMATION CONGRATULATIONS
Many, many Congratulations to all who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Friday evening. We welcome the newly Confirmed and their families, to Mass at St. Columba’s this Sunday. Their Confirmation certificates will be presented at the end of Mass. Thank you very much to all their prayer sponsors and all who prayed for the candidates and their catechists.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
Many thanks for £260.64 which was collected by the parish recently.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 10 NOVEMBER
A short service of remembrance for the Upton churches will be held this afternoon at Holy Ascencion church at 4.30 p.m.

We have a New Parish Registration Form to be completed and sent to either parish office to let us know that you are here and enable us to welcome you to the parish. The form can be completed and submitted online or downloaded and printed out. Instructions are on the form, which can also be found in the front porches of both churches. You will find it on the I’m New tab of the website.

COMMUNICATIONS GROUP: WEBSITE
A tremendous amount of work has been done to improve the parish website by adding helpful information, photographs and key contact numbers. It’s now a very valuable resource for anyone wanting to know about the parish. The work is almost complete and the parish owes huge thanks to Mike Forber, who manages the website for us on an entirely voluntary basis. Do visit the website and see for yourselves. Lyn Coyle.

CHESTER AID TO THE HOMELESS
With winter coming, the charity are in desperate need of the following items of clothing: Men’s Shorts; men’s joggers; men’s underwear; men’s socks. They are also looking for some men’s clothing in XXL including a few coats! Any items can be left by the foodbank boxes in our church porches or contact Alex Mosquera on 01244 506 877 who will organise collection. Thank you.

BAPTISMAL CANDLES AND CERTIFICATES
Irene Queenan is going to retire soon from the art of preparing Baptismal Candles and Certificates. If anyone would like to take over this role, please contact the office.

CHRISTMAS CARDS
Christmas cards are on sale in the Piety Shop. If anyone would like any other religious items, please ring Janet on 01244 329469 as I have a catalogue and can order the item.

SOUND SYSTEM AT ST THERESA’S
We have had a trail of a new sound system installed at St Theresa’s and the feedback so far has been very positive.

BUILDING WORKS
Most of the outside work has now been completed, just a few finishing touches to be made. The internal decorating has not yet been started but this should take place in the next few weeks.

WANTED – PROJECTOR AND SCREEN
Has anyone got a projector and/or screen that we could have or borrow please? If so, please contact one of the parish offices.

RED MISSION BOXES, ST COLUMBA’S
If you are a red Mission box holder, please leave your box in the sacristy for counting and pick up your emptied box, with your name on, from the table in the rear porch of St Columba’s.

TWO ADMINISTRATOR VACANCIES

ASSISTED SUICIDE BILL
The Bill is to be debated in the House of Common later this month (Friday 29th November) that would legalise assisted suicide in this country. It is extremely important that concerned citizens write to their MP to make their voice known. On Saturday 9th November, at Hoole URC Church, Hoole Road, Chester, CH2 3NT from 10.00am to 3pm.  Free entry, variety of craft stalls, raffle and more.

TALK BY CARDINAL MICHAEL FITZGERALD
Cardinal Fitzgerald has spent all his working life as a missionary on the interface between Islam and Christianity, heading important Vatican departments in this field and working in key Middle East postings, including Egypt and Jerusalem. He is coming to St Werburgh’s (CH1 1QJ) on Wednesday 13th November to talk about Muslim-Christian Relations Today, and to answer our questions. All very welcome. 7.30 pm start, 8.15 pm Questions and Answers, 9.00 pm finish.

THE NEW LECTIONARY
The parish now has copies of the New Lectionary which comes into use on the First Sunday of Advent. Fr William invites all parish Readers to join a gathering on Saturday 16th November, in St Columba’s Hall, 10.00 for 10.30 am to 12 noon, to learn about the new document. Please will Readers record their intention to attend with a tick against their name on one of the forms at the front entrances to our churches. Other interested parishioners are welcome to attend please will they record their intention by notifying St. Theresa’s 01244 371660 or St. Columba’s 01244 624019. Those parishioners who ordered the revised Sunday Missal can collect their copies, discounted payment of £17.95, in cash or by cheque made payable to St. Columba’s or St. Theresa’s.

ST. COLUMBA CHIDREN CHOIR RECUITMENT
The Little Choir of St Columba plays at 11a.m. Mass on the first Sunday of the month in term time, and young people who would like to sing, play the guitar or percussion are invited to join. YOUTH SUNDAY 24 NOVEMBER
We are looking for several young volunteers to welcome, be collectors, read the readings and read the prayers of the faithful etc on Youth Sunday. SYNOD SESSIONS RESUME
 The second session is now taking place in Rome, it started on Wednesday 2 October and runs to Sunday 27 October 2024 in order to continue the work of the Synod on Synodality around the theme “For a Synodal Church: communion, participation and mission” Bishop Barron from Winona-Rochester in America has penned his thoughts on his hopes and aspirations as he left for the synod.  The discussions which are taking place are set out in a working document , that all delegates are asked to read before attending. Discussions will consider the involvement of more laity, especially women, in the governance of the Church, in both “decision-making” and “decision-taking.  It will look at practical theology and how our understanding of church institutions and practices can be made more concrete for example setting up lay pastoral councils, accountability etc. And of listening to one another and the Holy Spirit.  https://www.wordonfire.org/articles/barron/as-i-leave-for-the-second-session-of-the-synod/

THE NEW LECTIONARY
The parish now has copies of the New Lectionary which comes into use on the First Sunday of Advent. Fr William invites all parish Readers to join a gathering on Saturday 16th November, in St Columba’s Hall, 10.00 for 10.30 am to 12 noon, to learn about the new document. Please will Readers record their intention to attend with a tick against their name on one of the forms at the front entrances to our churches. Other interested parishioners are welcome to attend please will they record their intention by notifying St. Theresa’s 01244 371660 or St. Columba’s 01244 624019. Those parishioners who ordered the revised Sunday Missal can collect their copies, discounted payment of £17.95, in cash or by cheque made payable to St. Columba’s or St. Theresa’s.

BUILDING WORKS – ST THERESA’S
The last pour of concrete has taken place and work will now start on reinstating the flagstones and tarmac.  The larger cracks in the presbytery have been dealt with  and decorating works are due to start next week.  It is hoped that the work will be completed by the 1st November.

The painting of the outside of the church has just begun and will continue over the next few weeks. It should not cause any serious interruption. The Little Choir of St Columba plays at 11a.m. Mass on the first Sunday of the month in term time, and young people who would like to sing, play the guitar or percussion are invited to join. RALLY ROSARY – TODAY 13 OCTOBER
There will be a Rally Rosary on Sunday 13 October for Our Lady of Fatima for World Peace.  To do 15 Decades of the Rosary, starting at 6pm in your home.  Thanks to all who join in on this very special occasion.

YOUTH GROUP
Our youth group will meet on Monday 21st October, starting at 7pm in the Iona chapel and finishing at 8.30pm in St.Columba’s Church hall. All parishioners in school year 5, or older are very welcome to come along and join our happy group, learn a bit about our faith, play games, do activities, and generally have fun, snacks provided. SYNOD SESSIONS RESUME
 The second session is now taking place in Rome, it started on Wednesday 2 October and runs to Sunday 27 October 2024 in order to continue the work of the Synod on Synodality around the theme “For a Synodal Church: communion, participation and mission” Bishop Barron from Winona-Rochester in America has penned his thoughts on his hopes and aspirations as he left for the synod.  The discussions which are taking place are set out in a working document , that all delegates are asked to read before attending. Discussions will consider the involvement of more laity, especially women, in the governance of the Church, in both “decision-making” and “decision-taking.  It will look at practical theology and how our understanding of church institutions and practices can be made more concrete for example setting up lay pastoral councils, accountability etc. And of listening to one another and the Holy Spirit.  https://www.wordonfire.org/articles/barron/as-i-leave-for-the-second-session-of-the-synod/

SOUND SYSTEM AT ST THERESA’S
We have received a quote for £17,989.32, no it’s not a typing error! Unfortunately, we do not have the money to carry out the work. If anyone has any fundraising ideas, please let Fr William know.

SAYING GOODBYE REMEMBRANCE SERVICE
Saying Goodbye, (part of the Mariposa Trust) will be hosting a very special Baby loss remembrance and support service on 20th October at 2.30p.m, in Manchester Cathedral. It is a service for anyone who has lost a baby in pregnancy, at birth or in early years, whether the loss was yesterday or 80 years ago. Welcome! We have a New Parish Registration Form to be completed and sent to either parish office to let us know that you are here and enable us to welcome you to the parish. The form can be completed and submitted online or downloaded and printed out. Instructions are on the form, which can also be found in the front porches of both churches. MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING – A GREAT SUCCESS
Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Macmillan appeal such a success. The bakers, helpers and customers together raised £267.50 for the charity. We were supported by parishioners from St Theresa’s as well as St Columba’s, so a real joint effort.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 10 NOVEMBER
There is to be a short service of Reflection for the Upton Churches at Holy Ascension at 4.30 p.m.  on 10 November.  See the poster on the Notice Boards.

CHESTER REPAIR CAFÉ
Run by Friends of the Earth – pilot scheme- Saturday 19 October 11-12.30.  Bring along broken items and volunteers will do their best to give them a new lease of life.  Items can include, small electricals (no microwaves); bikes; clothing/textiles; computers/software.  If you can help repair and want to volunteer head to  www.chesterfoe.co.uk/chester-repair-cafe

EXAMS OFFICER VACANCY AT THE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
Permanent Role over 41.2 weeks a year (Term Time) paid over 12 months. 37 hours a week 8am to 4pm (3.30 pm Friday). To include INSET days and exam results days. For more information please email kilcoynea@christofidelis.org.uk. Closing date 3pm on Wednesday 23rd October.

ST. COLUMBA’S CHURCH
The painting of the outside of the church has just begun and will continue over the next few weeks. It should not cause any serious interruption. Contractors will come in the next few weeks to fill in the sinkhole in the car park which does not show any signs of further development.        Pauline Rourke

ASDA ARE RUNNING CASHPOT FOR SCHOOLS
From now until November, for those who use the ASDA Rewards App, you can opt in on the cashpots tab and select St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s or St Theresa’s Primary School.   ASDA will then donate to the schools! 

THE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL, CHESTER – CHRISTMAS FAIR

BUILDING WORKS – ST THERESA’S
Work started on Monday 16th September- a week later than scheduled due to the weather. Church services will not be affected, but there will be vans on the car park and a fenced off area for a skip which means unfortunately that the bins are at the front of church.The first pour of concrete has been carried out but work has been hampered by the amount of rain we’ve had which means they have had to pump water out of the holes that have been dug.  Work is still on track for an eight week finish.
